About the Temple
Jambukeshwarar is one of the Pachabutha Stahala associated with Water (jala, appu). A natural underground spring continuously fills the inner sanctum with water, keeping the Shivalingam partially submerged year-round.
Maa Parvathi born as human as instructed by Lord Shiva. Parvathi made a Shiva Lingam with the waters of River Kaveri. Parvathi did severe penance towards Shiva, Shiva gave darshan to Parvathi and gave upadesa (teachings) to Parvathi, Shiva as Guru roopam. Everyday during Uchikala Pooja (between 11 AM to 12 PM) temple priest who is male, dressed as a woman with Maa Parvathi's ornaments like Crown and offered pooja to Lord Shiva, as if Maa Parvathi doing pooja to Lord Shiva. During thi Uchikala pooja time Gho (cow) pooja will happen.
Shiva Ganas - Pushpadanda and Maliavan quarrelled among themselves to who is greater in serving Lord Shiva. At some point, they cursed each other to be born as a Spider and Elephant. Maliavan born as Spider and Pushpadanda as Elephant. They both offer Shiva Pooja at Jambukeshwaram, daily Elephant bring water from river Kaveri and offered abishekam, pooja to the shiva linga under the Jambu tree. In the evening Spider build web over the lingam to prevent dry leaves, dust and direct sunlight over the lingam. In the morning Elephant cleans the web and offered abishekam pooja to the linga. This is the daily scene in the temple.
One day Spider wants to know why the web is cleared in the morning, the Elephant came and clears the web and offered pooja to the linga, seeing the protection web cleared by Elephant, Spider got anger crawled into Elephant trunk and bite the Elephant to death. Moved by their deep devotion towards the Lord Shiva, Shiva cleared the curse of both the Ganas. Since the Spider killed the Elephant he has to undergo the result of his action (Karma), then he born in the Chola prince family and become King Kotchengatchozha. As an elephant worshipped the Lord here, this place came to be known as 'Thiru Aanai Kaa' (Thiru – Holy, Aanai – Elephant, Kaa (Kaadu) – Forest). Later the actual name 'Thiruaanaikaa' become 'Thiruvanaikaval' and 'Thiruvanaikoil'.

Highlights
Thaadanga Pradhishtaa / Adhi Shankara
Once Goddess Akilandeswari was fierce like 'Ugra Devatha'. Sri Adhi Shankara transferred her ferocity into 'Thadangas'(ear rings) and the adorned her with the 'Thadangas'. He also installed 'Prasanna Vinayaga' (Lord Ganesh), opposite to her shrine so that She might look on with a beneficent eye. The Thadanga Pratishtha is done even today (once in few years) by the Sankaracharyars (successors of Adhi Shankara) of the Kanchi Kamakoti Pitham. The Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam is also running a 'Vedha Padasala' (religious school where the Vedas are taught) on the North Car street.
Sage Jambu
Sage by name 'Jambu Munivar' (munivar – sage). He once got a rare and sacred 'Venn Naaval' fruit and he offered that fruit to Lord Siva. The Lord after eating the fruit spitted the seed. Jambu Munivar took and swallowed the seed, as it is sacred as the seed came from the Lord’s mouth. Immediately a 'Naaval' tree began to grow in the Saint's head. The Saint prayed to Lord Siva that He should take his abode under that tree. Lord accepted and asked him to continue his penance in the forest on the banks of river Cauvery and said that he will one day come there and abode under that tree.
After many years Devi Akilandeswari worshiped Lord Shiva under that tree during her penance. Thus as he took adobe under the tree on Jambu Munivar he was called as 'Jambukeshwara' and the place is called as 'Jambukeshwaram'. Also thus the 'Venn Naaval' became the 'Sthala Vriksham' (Temple’s Sacred tree). The Shiva Lingam is placed under the Venn naaval tree in this temple. Even today you can see that Venn Naaval tree at the temple, which is said to be many hundred years old.
Kotchengatchozha Nayanar:
A king in Chola dynasty whose past life is Spider (associated with Jambukeshwar temple). Born as a king he designed and built elevated temples (maada kovil). Due to the fear of elephant from his pervious birth which he carried in his mind, he built around 70 Madakovil in Tamilnadu. These temples are built at a higher elevation with steep steps and the sanctum sanctorum is very narrow and sometimes steep steps intentionally to keep the elephants away. These 70 temples are still vibrant and active worship in Tamilandu.
At the site of his previous birth legend site, he built this magnificent Jambukeshwar temple around the sacred Jambu tree. You can find this story of this legend in the west wall of sanctum sanctorum.
Poet Kalamegam
Kalamegam works as a cook and care taker in temple kitchen (Thirumadapalli) in the Srirangam temple, later moved to Jambukeshwarar temple due to a rival created for his scared ash smeared over his forehead. One fine day Amma Akiladeshwari came as a women chewing betel leaves (thambulam). She asked a Brahmin who prayed Amma to bless him to became a poet, to open his mouth for her betel leaves. But the Brahamin got angry, so Amma moved to devotee Varadhan, who is taking a nap in the temple. She asked him to open his mouth for her betel leaves. He opened his mouth and instantly he poured Tamil poems upon Amma Akilandeshwari. Later people called him Kalamegam for his poetic skill. So devotees offer betel leaves to Akilandeshwar to become scholars.
In Sanatana Dharma saliva is called as uchchhishta, which is used instantly transfer the energy and knowledge into the devotees.
Vibuthi Chittar
Lord Shiva himself came in the form of Vibuthi Siddhar completes the fifth prakaram of this temple, when a Chola king has to encounter a invasion for his kingdom. Hence, fifth prakara is named Vibhuti Prakara and the walls around as Tiruneetran Tirumadhil (Sacred ash walls). There is a shrine for Vibhuti Chitthar on the banks of Brahmma Theertha.
Pancha Praharam (Brahmotsavam) and Panguni Ther (Car Festival):
A number of festivals take place in this temple throughout the year The Mandala 'Brahmotsavam', celebrated in the Tamil months of Panguni and Chithirai (March- April), for 40 days and attracts thousands of devotees. The legend behind this is, once Lord Brahma (the Creator) became very proud on himself as a creator and he fell in love with one of the beautiful girl he has created and because of this he began to lose his powers and people created by him turned vicious and died an early age.
Then Brahma realising his mistake prayed to Shiva to rid out of his sin. Brahma came to this “Jambu Vanam” (Jambu forest) and started to do penance on Lord Siva. He offer Shiva pooja for 40 days, created a “Theertham” (Spring, called "Brahma Theertham" which you can see at the 4th Praharam South Car Street) and took a dip every day before pooja. Shiva wanted to test him whether he could be distracted again from his duty as a creator. Siva and Parvathi exchanged their dresses and appeared before Brahma. Brahma recognised Siva and prayed to him to forgive his sins and so did Shiva. Brahmotsavam is celebrated in the month of 'Panguni'.
On the 37th day of the Brahmotsavam the Pancha-Prakara festival is conducted. In this festival Shiva is dressed like a Parvathi and Parvathi as Shiva were taken out in procession in all the five praharams (enclosures) of the temple. This procession lasts for one night and one day. This is the only day Lord Shiva and Devi Parvathi were taken in procession on the 5th praharam.
Aadi Pooram and Theppam: “Aadi Pooram” is another sacred festival in this temple. It’s a ten days festival. The tenth day will fall on the star “Pooram” which is the star of Annai “Akilandeswari”. On all these ten days Akilandeswari will be taken out as procession in the 4th praharam. Each day Akilandeswari will come in different “Vahanams” (like Rishabha, Pushpa Pallakku, Annapakshi, etc.,). Aadi pooram is celebrated for 12 days.
Aadi Velli: Tamil month “Aadi” is a auspicious and only in this month you will come across five Fridays. All these Fridays are very auspicious for Annai Akilandeswari. Thousands of devotees will visit and pray to Akilandeswari on those Fridays. You can see non-stop crowd from the dawn to the dusk in the temple.
Thai Poosam: Like “Pancha Praharam” another important festival is “Thai Poosam”. On the day when the star is “Poosam” in the Tamil month of “Thai” (January – February); The Shiva and Devi taken out for a procession to the “Poosa Mandapam” on banks of river “Cooleron” for “Theerthawari” [Cooleron is a river branched from river Cauvery at Mukkombu just few kilometers West of Srirangam-Thiruvanaikoil island and again merges and splits at “Grand anaicut” (Kallannai)]. Thai Poosam is the only day when the Lord and Devi leave away from 5th Praharam. Vasantha Urchavam: Vasantha Urchavam (Autumn festival) is celebrated for 10 Days in the month of 'Vaikasi' (May - June, Summer).
Navarathri: Navarathri is celebrated for 10 days in the month 'Purattasi'.
Thai Theppam: Theppa Urchavam (Float Festival) is celebrated for 12 days in the month of 'Thai' (January-February).
Vaikashi Annabishekam and Aipasi Vibuthi Kaapu: It is also noteworthy that there is a perennial spring in Lord Shiva shrine. There will be more water in the sanctum in the rainy season in Aipasi (October-November), as Annabishek is not possible during this time, the same is performed during Vaikasi (May-June) when the floor would be just wet only. On the Aipasi Poornima, full moon day Lord is covered with sacred ash.
